Local Initiative
Focus: Sustainability Education

Learning for a Sustainable Future

This project examines gaps in sustainability education across various landscapes, investigating how limited environmental literacy affects communities and environmental issues. Our research combines literature analysis with interviews involving educators, school leaders, researchers, and education stakeholders to identify barriers to effective sustainability instruction. We collect data to assess the availability and impact of environmental education programs across different settings. The findings may support evidence-based recommendations and the development of educational resources that address identified gaps and strengthen sustainability education initiatives.

State Initiative
Focus: Extreme Heat Resilience

The Heat Is On: California's Extreme Heat Resilience Initiative

This project explores how California can better protect communities from the public health and infrastructure risks of extreme heat while strengthening the systems designed to withstand it. Analysts investigate topics such as urban heat islands, protections for outdoor workers, grid reliability during heat waves, cooling infrastructure, the impacts of extreme heat on aquatic environments, agricultural productivity, and heat-related health disparities. The final goal is to produce policy briefs that inform legislation around cooling center standards, heat emergency planning, building code reforms, tree canopy initiatives, and utility protections during extreme heat events.

Federal Initiative
Focus: Materials & Waste

Partner Research Initiative with the U.S. Plastics Pact

This project will be conducted in partnership with the U.S. Plastics Pact and will focus on a national sustainability issue identified by the organization. Analysts will have the opportunity to contribute to a real-world research project while working with one of the leading organizations addressing environmental challenges related to materials and waste. The specific scope of the project will be determined in collaboration with the U.S. Plastics Pact at the start of the cycle and will provide analysts with the opportunity to produce research that supports their efforts.
